more simple ways to go green
October 7, 2009 by admin.
A few more ways that you can live a greener lifestyle without major life changes:
- Use cloth dish towels not paper towels as much as possible
- Turn off your faucet while you brush your teeth
- Do not run your dishwasher unless it is really full
- Turn off the shower while you wash your hair
- Turn off your computer and printer when you are not home or out of the office.
- Recycle and compost
Get creative — what are your ideas on living green? share them with me.

Green made simple
September 22, 2009 by admin.
I was recently asked where to start with ‘greening’ a household. The simplest place to start is with your lightbulbs. Go to your local hardware store (or lighting supplier) and purchase CF (Compact Fluorescent) bulbs. They now make them for almost all applications from the ‘twisty’ type, to regular light bulbs, and flood lights and even bulbs for your coach lamps. Just making this simple change will save your investment in about 6 months and about $30.00 over its’ lifetime. CF bulbs use about 75% less energy and last about 10 times as long as conventional bulbs. Of course, this is only the beginning, so if you want moreinformation, give me a call.

Siding Replacement
October 31, 2008 by admin.
If your house has old Masonite (or hardboard) siding and it is starting to swell up it is probably time to look at repairs. You have a few options:
- Repairs - If you repair, you may make things worse, as you will inevitably damage a portion of the existing siding during the repair process. Additionally, you are only putting off the inevitable job of having to replace the siding at a later date.
- Replacement - There are two options, the first is to cover the existing siding with vinyl siding, this is not only rather expensive, but you end up with what one of my clients described as a ‘Plastic House’ also, vinyl siding is subject to damage from lawnmowers and weedeaters among other things. Option number two is to remove the hardboard siding and replace it with James Hardie ‘Fiber Cement’ siding which is a permanent and pretty much zero maintenance option. When we install Fiber Cement siding, we also try to replace the trim elements with synthetic / treated wood to further minimize future maintenance issues.
For a free consultation on siding repair or replacement, call Bill @ 901-682-6821

Green Living
October 30, 2008 by admin.
Green Living was, in the past, sort of a ‘fad’. It is not any longer. With rising energy costs and growing environmental concerns, we must be aware of the impact that our industry has on the environment and the cost to maintain our chosen lifestyle.
Green Living is not just for tree Huggers, is can be as simple as using re-usable grocery bags or installing programmable thermostats to help save money on heating and air conditioning.
As a Builder I have been aware for years of the impact that we have on the environment and have tried to minimize the waste that my company creates by recycling whatever we can. Luckily the industry overall has finally begun to take notice and do the same thing.
We are one of only a few builders in the Memphis are to be Energy Star Certified, and we have recently completed the first independently build Energy Star Certified Home. (see my post on Belle Farms with Photos)
If you are planning on Remodeling or Building and want a ‘Green’ perspective on the process, please give me a call.
